Appeal For Unity

PRIME Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that political leaders and workers need to give up individual interest and work in unity to protect and consolidate democracy in the country. Addressing Nepali Congress workers in Biratnagar the other day, Prime Minister Koirala called upon all party workers to cultivate a sense of collective allegiance towards the party and the nation. At a time when there have been concerted efforts to weaken and defame democracy in the country, the Prime Minister’s call for unity among Nepali Congress workers carries a special significance. Nepali Congress is the oldest and largest political party in the country, which has already fought two successful revolutions for democracy. The nation, people and democracy are above individual and party interests and this is the ideal of Nepali Congress. It believes that democracy is the prerequisite for country’s development and consolidation of nationalism. When democracy is in crisis, all democratic forces must work together rising above self and individual interest for protection and consolidation of democracy. If NC workers themselves, specially now, remain divided and indulge in self-interest only, democracy may fall into further crisis. Democracy is the best political system, which protects people’s rights and empowers people and efforts need to be directed for strengthening it. This can be done only through collective efforts and coordination among different political forces that have faith in democracy and constitution. As the Nepali Congress is in the government, it needs to take initiatives for the protection and consolidation of democracy and create a national consensus for this. The government has already initiated this process at the centre. Prime Minister Koirala has thus asked NC workers to go to grassroots level and work for the interest of the people. This is the call for creating a sense of unity and consensus right from the grass roots level among NC workers as well as among different parties. At the absence of such efforts at the grass roots level, some elements have been active to create an atmosphere of terror and intimidated people. To some extent, these elements have been successful in creating public apathy about the present political system. If democratic forces especially Nepali Congress workers go to the people and work with self-confidence, anti-democratic elements would be automatically alienated from the people. Thus, it is the time for unity, consensus and collective efforts for the best interest of the nation, people and democracy.
