Medicinal Properties Of Sohijan

Sohijan, which we use as vegetable, is one of medicinal plants of our country, especially the Terai region. It can be used as medicine in various diseases owing to its medicinal values.

Sohijan is found all parts of Terai from the month of Chaitra to Baisakha (March-April) as well as in Kathmandu valley. Nowadays we can easily find it in market. The fruit of this plant is taken as vegetable. But very few of us are aware of its medicinal values.

Sohijan’s tree is small with thick bark. Its flower yellow in colour has a strong smell. Sohijan is long tapering about ten feet or more in length with green colour. Its seeds round with broad-wings at the angles. Botanical name of Sohijan is Moringa Oleifara. Family of this plant is moringaceae. It is also locally named as Munga in some parts of Terai region.

Sohijan and its leaf and bark can be used to control blood pressure. Even if the Sohijan is not available, its leaf or the bark can be used as vegetable.

Root bark is used as fermentation to relieve spasm. Sohijan is also used in diseases of liver and spleen, articular pains, tetanus and paralysis. Flowers of this plant are also used as stimulant.
