Sincere Action Needed To Mitigate AIDS Epidemic The epidemic of HIV/AIDS is a social problem that is growing at an alarming rate. The killer disease has social, psychological and economic impacts on the human beings. Apart from the global challenge of poverty alleviation, the socio-economic impact of this alarming spread of the epidemic is a matter of serious concern worldwide. The situation is sure to worsen if the present trend in the spread of the disease continues for some more time and this will more particularly affect the developing countries. It will be the greatest threat to sustainable human development. Much more worrying point is that a huge amount of resources will have to be spent in prevention and care in the years to come. The cases of HIV/AIDS is estimated to have crossed 35000 in Nepal. Despite the efforts of prevention and control, the problem is unfortunately rising. High mobility and migration, not only from rural to urban areas and vice versa, but also between different countries, has allowed the virus to spread more quickly. Therefore, sincere action with commitment on the part of the concerned authority is what is urgently needed to mitigate the problem that has posed a great threat to the entire world. Shashi Dahal |
