One stitch in time saves nine. But it seems that Nepalese authorities are either not aware of the importance of this popular proverb or simply dont bother what message it carries. So, they often fail to apply timely measures and hurry up to find solution to a problem only after it goes beyond preventive stage and becomes acute and catastrophic. There are a number of instances such as sinking of the bridges over Bagmati and Manahara rivers that clearly indicate reluctance of the responsible persons to initiate prompt actions. Had the government been serious about these issues raised by the people then, the country and the common people would not have suffered much. Had the authorities banned the collection of sand from Manahara river, the bridge would not have collapsed thereby causing several inconveniences to the common people. Yet, the authorities do not appear to have learnt any lesson from these evidences. Another of such an example is the bridge over Bagmati river at Tinkune, which is now on the verge of collapse as the riverbed is getting deeper and deeper everyday. I wonder why the concerned officials, who probably drive along the same bridge everyday, are not introducing any measure to save it. Gokarna
