Facts Made Clear

THE Maoists have had their run for the money and are at the receiving end after they breached the so-called cease of all violent activities. It was this particular event that turned the tide against the Maoists who have been termed terrorists together with the declaration of the State of Emergency. During this time many Maoist terrorists have been killed and scores have surrendered in front of the concerned authorities. The Maoists on the run cannot be elusive for long because of the mobilisation of the Royal Nepalese Army. The ‘cordon and search’ operation of the army has yielded encouraging results with the arrest of suspected Maoists, recovery of arms and ammunitions that had been looted from the police posts earlier and also explosives and other equipment from the Maoist hideouts in various parts of the country.

In a move to apprise the general public of the objectives of the declaration of the State of Emergency and the gains made thereafter, regular press meets have been organised. In this connection, Minister of Information and Communications Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta, who is also the spokesperson of the government, addressing the media at an interaction programme organised by the Reporters’ Club the other day, underlined that the objective of the government at present is the total disarming of the Maoists and foiling all their terrorist activities. On the question of how long would this state last, Minister Gupta made it clear that as soon as the Maoists were disarmed the State of Emergency would be lifted. To the satisfaction of all it was also stated that the government had no intention of prolonging the duration of the emergency unnecessarily but he admitted that ‘the road to victory may be long’. It has to be borne in mind here that the task is not as easy as some sectors deem it to be and want the emergency to be lifted immediately. The general people have suffered much from the Maoists’ spree of violence and looting but now they have heaved a sigh of relief at the return of peace and security in the affected areas. This is an achievement in the sense that the government’s promise of maintaining law and order for the people to enjoy unhindered peace and security is materialising faster than many had expected. The fight against terrorism in the country should be adequately supported by everyone as this is the only way for the country to move ahead on the path of socio-economic development.
