Nepalese oranges gain popularity in India Siraha (RSS): Local oranges grown in eastern hilly region of Sagarmatha zone are gaining popularity amongst Indian consumers. According to businessmen dealing in the sale of oranges, about 50 quintals of oranges is brought to the local markets like Lahan, Golbazaar, Dhangadhi and Mirchaiya every day from the hilly areas of Udaypur such as Gaighat, Beltar, Murkuchi and Katari. About 5 quintals of oranges are dispatched to nearby Indian markets such as Lokaha, Khutauna, Jayanagar, Patna and Madhuwani. The turnover from the bulk and retail sale across the district is around Rs. 100,000, businessman Rajendra Thakur told RSS. Over 500 businessmen are said to have been involved in selling oranges at various markets in the terai belt and about 2,000 families make a living by selling oranges daily. "This year, the price of oranges being brought from eastern part of Udaypur district has increased compared to last year", said wholesale dealer Sitaram Raya. At present the orange costs Rs. 25 to Rs. 30 per kg in the local market. A large quantity of oranges brought to Lahan, a commercial hub for the people of the entire sagarmath zone is being exported to various Indian markets. Following the start of the winter season, businessmen traverse through hilly areas and purchase oranges in bulk from the local farmers. Other Story |
