LETTER TO THE EDITOR

 Kathmandu Thursday December 27, 2001 Paush 12,  2058.

No Need To Have Broader Coalition

I would like to draw the attention of Nepali Congress and its cadres through this letter. I was shocked to hear that there has been a call for broader coalition government when the party has comfortable majority to run the government. At a time when the country is in the state of emergency that was imposed to crackdown on the Maoist insurgency, the concept of broader coalition, is not a desirable one. On top of that we don’t have a hung parliament; Nepali Congress has an absolute majority and does not need to include any opposition lawmakers in the government. This might weaken the spirit of the incumbent government that is doing its job with firm resolve. If Nepal’s democracy is in danger as seen by some, we’ll have to do whatever we can to safeguard the system, but not change the government.
