Chief Justice Upadhyaya escapes attempt on life unhurt BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmandu, Feb. 3:Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhyaya escaped unhurt an attack by the Maoists while he was on his way to Surkhet from Nepalgunj to take part in a function today. But the Registrar of the Surkhet Appellate Court Baldev Dhital and four other security policemen were killed in the attack. Likewise, Purushottam Sharma, Judge of the same court and two other police personnel were also injured in the attack. They are undergoing treatment at the Nepalgunj Hospital. The incident occurred at about 16:45 hours (4:45 PM) today at Chhinchhu near Surkhet when the Maoists suddenly attacked the lead vehicle, containing the security personnel, carrying the Chief Justice and others going from Nepalgunj to Surkhet. In the attack, Dhital and four policemen died on the spot, but however, the security policemen managed to take Chief Justice Upadhyaya safely from the incident spot to Surkhet. He is presently in the army camp in Surkhet. Meanwhile, Srikant Regmi the Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, said, "this is a distardly act on the life of Chief Justice". "The attackers are suspected to be the Maoists", said Regmi and also informed that "Maximum police personnel have been mobilised in the area to find and arrest those involved in such cowardly act". "The police personnel were deputed for the protection of VIP and not against the Maoists", he said and also further added that the "other details are yet to be received". RSS adds: Terrorists attacked with bombs and guns the vehicles which were carrying the Chief Justice and other members of his team killing the Chief Justices security guards police constable Ram Bahadur Basnet and policemen Birendra Khadka, Khagendra Magar and Kaushal Budha on the spot, according to the Home Ministry. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ramchandra Poudel talked to Chief Justice Upadhyaya at Birendranagar over telephone and expressed concern over the incident.
