Kathmandu, Feb. 14 (RSS): His Royal Highness Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev granted audience at Panchkhal today to a contingent of the Sreejung Battalion which is joining peacekeeping forces under UNIFIL. HRH the Crown Prince, on the occasion, acquired information on various training activities and witnessed an exhibition concerning the art of peace. The 40th contingent from the Sreejung Battalion is going to substitute the 39th contingent from the Sribhairabnath Battalion with UNIFIL, Lebanon at the call of the United Nations. The contingent led by lieutenant colonel Tajman Singh Basnet comprises 709 personnel. The Shree Sreejung Company was established during the reign of His Majesty King Ranabahadur Shah in 1840 Bikram Era. At the function, Defence Minister Acharya said that in line with Nepals support and cooperation to the UNs endeavours in maintaining world peace, the Royal Nepal Army has been continuously participating in peacekeeping work in various countries. He expressed the confidence that the contingent on duty for the sake of peace would work with the spirit of sacrifice and service and professional efficiency. Chief of the Army Staff General Prajwal Shumsher Rana referred to the activities of the Royal Nepal Army in maintaining peace. Lieutenant colonel and training chief Victor Jung Rana said that training had been imparted on arms, basic military art, peacekeeping operations and other relevant topics while Major Prabhu Ram Sharma spoke of the activities of the peace keeping forces assigned to East Timor. Nepal has been sending peacekeepers since 1958 at the call of the United Nations. Thirty-seven thousand Royal Nepal Army personnel have already taken part in peace-keeping missions while 37 of them have laid down their lives in such operations. Other Stories |
