Democracy Day’s Message

TODAY the nation is celebrating the 51st National Democracy Day. It was a great victory for the Nepalese people when through an armed revolt, they were able to end the one hundred and four years of despotic Rana rule on 7th Falgun just 51 years back. Had not the Ranas kept Nepal and Nepalese people under their clutches for over a century, this Himalayan Kingdom might have been far ahead than where she is today, as far as its development is concerned. But the Rana rulers whose sole aim was only to cling to power as long as possible treated the country like a family fiefdom, isolated the nation from the rest of the world, curtailed the fundamental rights of the people and shut the doors of development. So while the Rana rulers amassed immense wealth individually, the common people were suffering from poverty and were becoming victim of ignorance. Yet the Nepalese youths were so greatly influenced by the global waves of democracy, they started opening political organisations and waging armed revolt against the tyrannical Rana rulers. King Tribhuvan’s indirect support to the revolutionary forces also strengthened the anti-Rana movement in the country. Thus on this auspicious occasion of National Democracy Day we all have to salute late King Tribhuvan for his unwavering efforts to free the nation and the people from the despotic rule. Also we should not forget to pay tributes to the four brave martyrs—Dasharath Chand, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha and Sukraraj Shastri who encouraged the Nepalese people to fight for freedom by laying down their lives for democracy.

However, it was a sad fact that the hard-won democracy was snatched away about a decade after the historic victory and the Nepalese people were once again deprived of democratic rights for about thirty years. The freedom fighters of the historical revolution of 2007 B. S. and the common people suffered much under the three-decade-long partyless polity. Finally in 1990, people once gain succeeded to restore the multi-party democracy through the people’s popular movement. However, the restoration of the democratic rights will lose its essence unless the pace of development is accelerated according due consideration to the expectations of the people. For this all, especially the political parties which fought hard for restoration of democracy need to be more earnest in strengthening the democracy, guaranteeing the fundamental rights in a democracy and raising the living standards of the people. This is what the message of National Democracy Day should be.
