Demand for PM’s resignation conspiratorial, says Acharya

Banepa (Kavrepalanchok), Feb 18 (RSS): Minister for Defense and NC Central Member Mahesh Acharya has said that the demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala that has been made by citing alleged corruption in the procurement of Lauda Aircraft is conspiratorial in itself.

Minister for Defense and NC central member Acharya was speaking at a colloquium on "The past 50 years and our democracy" organised by NC Kavre district committee on the occasion of the 51st National Democracy Day today. Various freedom fighters were felicitated on the occasion.

The act of taking the issue to the press well before it is discussed in parliament and without paying any serious attention to the decision of the parliamentary committee concerned makes one to smell conspiracy, he observed.

Stating that such a cynical demand (for PM’s resignation) does not help promote parliamentary exercise, he said as sportsmen also need to follow certain rules of the game those exercising democracy, too, have to function in accordance with established democratic norms and values.

Since even the countries which have hundreds of years of experiences in democracy have not attained perfection in terms of democratic exercise, it has not been too late in Nepal’s case, he observed.

After the establishment of democracy the country has made quite a long stride in the fields of education, health, transport and telecommunications, he said, adding it is not reasonable to describe NC as a whole as corrupt just because of the misconduct of some public post holders.

Minister Acharya said the violence being perpetrated by the Maoists will never bring prosperity to the nation, rather it leads to anarchy.

There are many people in the Nepali Congress too, who are fighting against corruption and "Pajero culture", Mr Acharya said, adding that one should not look only at the negative side of the party.

MP Rajendra Kharel said the opposition and Maoists cannot make any difference if NC senior leaders Girija Prasad Koirala and Krishna Prasad Bhattarai moved ahead unitedly.

NC youth leader Nabindraraj Joshi lamented party workers, who were friendly and shared mutuality prior to the restoration of democracy, are now indulging in bitter rivalry.

Freedom fighters Dhandas Bade and Harshala Bade Shrestha were felicitated at the programme chaired by NC Kavre district president Madhu Prasad Acharya.
