House meeting adjourned

Kathmandu, Feb. 27 (RSS): The House of Representatives meeting was adjourned even without initiating the regular proceedings due to sloganeering and picketing of the well by the opposition parties today.

Earlier, 16 MPs of different parties had put forth their views with the permission of Speaker Taranath Ranabhat.

Then no sooner had the Speaker announced the beginning of zero hour in an attempt to initiate the regular proceedings of Parliament than all opposition MPs except those of Nepal Sadbhavana Party rushed to the well and started chanting slogans demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation citing his alleged involvement in the Lauda Aircraft controversy.

Despite the Speaker’s repeated request for the MPs picketing the well to take their seats, they continued chanting slogans for about four minutes. Speaker Ranabhat then announced the adjournment of the meeting till tomorrow amidst continuing pandemonium.

The House of Representatives meets again at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Meanwhile, with the opposition members walking out of the meeting, the National Assembly meeting was adjourned about eight minutes after it began today.

Earlier, making a statement with the permission of chairman Dr Mohammad Mohsin, Keshav Lal Shrestha of CPN-ML had said in view of the fact that even popularly-elected majority governments have failed to give the right direction to the country during the ten years since the restoration of democracy, there is a growing realization that the existing electoral system and the practice of electing the Prime Minister from Parliament are faulty.

He also complained that CPN-ML was not invited to the all-party meeting held to find a solution to the impasse in Parliament.

MP Shrestha then walked out of the meeting urging all opposition members to follow suit as the Prime Minister did not yield to the opposition’s demand for his resignation.

All opposition MPs followed MP Shrestha. Nepal Sadbhavana Party MPs were not present at the meeting today.

Chairman Dr Mohsin then adjourned the meeting.

The National Assembly next meets at 11:00 a.m. on March 1.
