Peace Rally

INTELLECTUALS and professionals from different disciplines took out a rally in Kathmandu the other day appealing to people and all other concerned to maintain peace, goodwill, and harmony among different ethnic, lingual and cultural communities in the country. Similarly such rallies calling for peace and harmony have also been organized in different parts of the country. This shows that the entire nation and people are deeply concerned about peace and social harmony, which is a major pre-requisite for stability and development in the nation. This nationwide concern came after the recent spate of violence that took communal colour in certain parts of the country in which seven persons were killed and property worth millions of rupees damaged. It badly hurt Nepal’s economy in general and tourism industry, which is the backbone of our economy, in particular. Nepal is a country with ethnic and cultural diversity. The basic foundation of Nepal’s nationalism and national identity lies in this diversity. Unity in diversity is the identity and strength of Nepal. However, there are certain elements in the country, who are looking for an opportune time to fulfill their vested interests by instigating people’s sentiments and by weakening this basic foundation of Nepal’s nationalism. At the same time there are other types of elements who do not want to see democracy in the country. The recent incidents of violence and disturbance are, perhaps, a part of the overall design of these elements. But political parties and all responsible citizens understood the ulterior design of these elements in time and stood firmly against such acts. The government also took appropriate and timely measures to control such a situation. As a result, the violence could not spread to other parts of the country. Thus, it is the duty of all Nepalese people to work collectively for the preservation of this long cherished diversity, which is the identity of Nepal, by maintaining social and communal harmony in the country. Violence only breeds violence. Conflict is by no means at the interest of the nation and the people. It is the time that all people of different ethnic communities work together for the common interest of the nation, which alone ensures development and stability in the country. People must recognize those, who want to fish in the troubled water, and punish them so that these elements may not dare raise their ugly head again. Perhaps, it is the popular sentiment and desire in which country’s interest also lies.
