The foreign mountaineers admit that Sherpas are always behind their success. Moreover, it is the Sherpa guys who have set the greatest number of divergent mountaineering world records. But quite contradictorily the government has never shown them any public honour. The story does not end here. That the Sherpas are not counted as climbers is the most humiliating situation. When foreigners scale the mountain, the government issues their names in the list of climbers but the Sherpas who accompany them are listed under also climbed. Does that mean that the porters ascent to the mountain is less significant than that of the foreigners where both the sides need equal toil on the job? As a matter of fact, the Sherpas should be praised more for the courageous act of climbing with loads on their back. I hope that the concerned authority would give adequate attention towards this issue. Sudan Dotel Other Stories |
