Developing Tourism

TOURISM industry is the backbone of Nepal’s economy. It is the largest foreign currency earner and has provided direct and indirect employment opportunities to a large number of people in Nepal. But this industry has not been free from problems and anomalies. This sector has suffered time and again because of several incidents. A couple of months ago, tourism business was hit by unnecessary wrangling and dispute between hotel owners and workers on the issue of ten per cent service tax. As a result, hotels and several other travel related enterprises had to be closed for days. This caused a heavy loss to travel industry and the nation as a whole. The problem was somehow resolved for the time being. But after sometimes, this sector again suffered another blow because of the strike at different times called by some political parties and other groups. Nepal known as a beautiful Himalayan Shangri-La and peaceful nation for foreigners is one of the popular destinations for visitors in the world. However, frequent strikes and other such incidents have tarnished the peaceful image of Nepal in the recent past and the statistics have shown that the arrival of tourists into Nepal declined. This is attributed to instability and violent incidents that have taken place in the country. If such incidents are not stopped completely, tourism industry would be further affected which would affect our entire national economy. It is, thus, very urgent to ensure stability and peace in the country so that our tourism industry would prosper in the future. Nepal’s tourism sector is one of the success stories in South Asia. Once this sector loses image, it would be difficult to regain that image which all concerned people must realise. The government has accorded high priority to the development of tourism sector. Private sector has also made very significant contribution in the promotion and development of Nepalese tourism industry. It is, now, at the larger interest of the nation to work collectively for the development of tourism industry. Tourism business prospers only when there is peace and stability in the country. Political parties must understand the fact that if our economy is ruined, people and the nation would suffer. It should be duty of all not to affect national economy for the petty political interest.
