For an agricultural country like Nepal, irrigation holds the top-most importance. The countrys gross domestic product is much lower in comparison to the farming community that shares almost 90 per cent of the total population. Since the country lacks a proper irrigation system, the farmers in most of the parts heavily depend on the rainwater, which severely affects the crop yields. This is of course a great setback to the national economy, which is yet to be self-sufficient. The past experiences have shown that construction of large canals is not only expensive but also time consuming though of course they are useful, for they help provide water for larger areas. Given the current economic situation of the country and urgency of the need for irrigation system at present, small irrigation projects seem to be much more beneficial than the larger ones. The smaller projects are not only convenient to manage but also provide the facility in a short period of time. Therefore, the concerned authorities should encourage the farming community of the country to go for small-scale irrigation projects that will certainly help them increase their yields.
