Under-19 SAARC Boxing BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmandu, March 7: Nepalese young pugilists made proud the country bagging three gold medals today in the ongoing South Asian Under-19 Boxing Championship at the Dashrath Stadiums Covered hall. The Championship has been organised by Elites Co-Ed, a Kathmandu based English Boarding School. Amit Tamang, Bigyan Lama and Bisan Limbu won gold medals in 13-15 age group beating all the Bangladeshi opponents on points in the four-round boxing tournament being held for the first time in Nepal. Tamang beat Shakil Mamun in 45kg categories, Lama outboxed Farizul Islam in 48 kg categories and Limbu won against M Safiullah in the 51kg categories. The three gold was the main highlight for the host in the second day of the tournament which is dominated more by foreigners in the 15-17 and 17-19 age group categories. In the semi-finals round of 15-17 and 17-19 age groups, Kumar Rai was downed by Bijendra Singh of India in 54 kg ( 15-17 age group). Manoj Chawdhary was knocked out by M Kamal of India in the 17-19 age (54 kg bout) while Bipin Shrestha was outboxed by Akhtarul Alam of Bangladesh on points. Likewise Puran Bahadur Lama of Nepal was beatn on points by Bangladeshs M Kamal Parvery while Sanjaya Kumar of India beat Nepals Kapil Rai as Rai retired in the second round of the bout. Similarly, Indias D Prashad beat Bangladeshs Nadeem Hossain in the 51 category of 15-17 age groups. In the gold medal event of 13-15 age group, Bangladeshs Faishal Mulia won the first gold of the day beating Lankan Ravinda S Patabendi. Sri Lankas KS Weerasinghe won the first gold for his country beating Dipendra Limbu while Bangladeshs Mehmud Ali won the final gold of the day beating Nepals Rikesh Gahle. Meanwhile, a exhibition bout featuring two Nepalese women boxers was also held at the venue today. |
