Joshi urges not to print photos that encourage terrorists Kathmandu, May 4 (RSS): Minister for Information and Communications Shivaraj Joshi has urged photo journalists not to publish photographs which encourage terrorists spreading violence, terror and fear, terrify police personnel and disturb law and order in the country. Minister Joshi was inaugurating an interaction programme on "Photo Journalism: Problems and Resolution" organised by the Department of Information on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day here today. As photos give an actual picture of poverty, unemployment, natural heritage and culture they are an important and effective medium of communications, he added. He also pointed out the need for photo journalists to pay attention towards protecting democracy by not publishing pictures which can hurt the multiparty system. Minister of State for Information and Communications Puskar Nath Ojha said the government and journalists should work together towards relieving the country of the existing situation marked by killings, violence and uncertainty. He said that the government is willing to extend cooperation as far as possible for the development of journalism. From the chair, general secretary of the federation of Nepalese Journalists Taranath Dahal expressed the view that a photo service should be started by the National News Agency, RSS along with its news service. This would be a big step forward in the development of photo journalism. Director General of the Department of Information Yubaraj Pandey, chairman of the Press Council Harihar Birahi, president of the Editors Society Govinda Biyogi, senior photo journalist at the Department of Information Basanta Kumar Chitrakar and photo journalist Min Bajracharya expressed the view that photography is a very sensitive and important part of journalism and special training should be provided to develop this to the international level.
