All-party Mandate

THE all-party meeting that was held in Kathmandu the other day gave the clear-cut mandate to the government to take any necessary measures to control terrorism and insurgency and ensure security in the country. This is the evidence that the entire nation and all political forces are against violence and terrorism. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, right after coming to power, has always sought national consensus to take any decision on important national issues. As a result, he has been able to muster support and co-operation from all sectors for tackling different national problems. The renewed violence perpetrated by Maoist rebels has, in deed, dashed the hopes of the people and the government for resolving the problem through dialogue to restore peace in the country. It is evident that the Maoist insurgents do not believe in democracy and peaceful solution of the problem. The insurgents have again taken up arms and challenged the nation’s security forces. It should be noted that the government also has force and weapons but it did not want to use force hoping to solve the problem through peaceful means. Such a stance should by no means be taken as the weakness of the government. Now the government has alerted all security apparatus to contain terrorism and maintain law and order in the country. Violence and terrorism are crimes against humanity. It is the duty of the government to curb terrorism and provide a sense of security to the people. Thus, the government has decided to take stern and effective measures to combat violence and terror in the country. All democratic political parties have shown an unprecedented unity against violence and terror and backed the government in its efforts for maintaining peace and security. This has given more strength to the government in its fight against terrorism. Based on national consensus, the government is expected to announce some bold and effective measures soon to combat and curb violence and terrorism. Terrorism and violence have never brought about positive changes in the world. Terrorism, therefore, must be dealt with firmly. As the government is set to take stern and effective measures to ensure security in the country and all political parties that have faith in democracy and human rights have expressed commitment to support the government’s efforts, people from all walks of life, now, need to extend a helping hand to the government for foiling terrorist efforts and containing them.
