Police claim national handball championship

Kathmandu, Oct. 17: Nepal Police claimed national handball championship today beating Mid-western region 17-12 in the final played at the Dashrath Stadium.

The national handball association has revived the national championship after the gap of seven years. The championship was last held in 1994 in Bhairahawa.

Nepal police who were trailing by 8-10 till the first half came from behind to shock Mid-western region. Padma Bahadur Nepali and Suk Bahadur Kumal slammed five goals each while Chhoti Lal Chaudhary hammered three and Yogendra Acharya scored two.

Meanwhile, the Mid Western team's cool headed penalty specialist Dinesh Bista scored six individual goals, four of which came from penalty shots. Mid-West's Bimal Gahatraj hammered three and Sunil Shrestha, Pankaj Shrestha and Amar Raj Sharma scored one goal each.

Earlier, Central region beat Far Western region 24-11 in which Central region's Ram Bahadur Thapa struck 11 goals. Thapa received best scorer of the tournament award for his 32 goals scored in whole tournament. Police's Padma Bahadur Nepali was named best player and Mid-west's Akhil Kumar Sharma was adjudged best keeper.

Birat Bajracharya, Bishwobam Malla, Samatbal Malla, Prakash Singh Thakuri, Ranjan Bista, Arun Kumar Karna, Jayant Kumar Sharma, Sekhar Chapagai, Aruna Gurung and Geeta Lama were the umpires and scorers of the tournament.

Nepalese Congress Central Working Committee member Prakash Man Singh distributed the cup and certificates to the winners and runners up.


Kuwait win Plate Cup final

Kathmandu, Oct 17: Kuwait won the plate cup final of Under-19 Asian Youth Cricket Cup played against Qatar today at the Kirtipur Cricket Ground.

With today’s six-wicket win, Kuwait claimed fifth place while losers Qatar got sixth in the eight-nation tournament.

Electing to bat first, Qatar posted a fighting 222 runs in 49.1 overs, in which Iftekhar Hussein emerged highest run scorer with 58 that include five 4s and two sixes. Khurram Azmal and Aminullah hit 39 and 34 respectively. Aminullah’s 34 include two fours and two huge sixes.

For Kuwait bowler Ali Talib claimed four wickets and Taimur Ashraf and Sajid Ashraf claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Aziz Matthew (62 not out) and Mohmmad Khan (63 runs) combined together to guide Kuwait to a emphatic six wicket victory in 42.1overs. Zishan Sabri also chipped with important 44 runs. Aminullah, Iftekhar and Rabid Khan took one wicket each for Qatar. Cricket Association of Nepal Jai Kumar Nath Shah handed over the plate cup to winners and cups to runners up. Aziz Matthew of Qatar bagged the man of the match award for his match winning 62 notout (75 balls with five fours).
