Police claim national handball championship BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmandu, Oct. 17: Nepal Police claimed national handball championship today beating Mid-western region 17-12 in the final played at the Dashrath Stadium. The national handball association has revived the national championship after the gap of seven years. The championship was last held in 1994 in Bhairahawa. Nepal police who were trailing by 8-10 till the first half came from behind to shock Mid-western region. Padma Bahadur Nepali and Suk Bahadur Kumal slammed five goals each while Chhoti Lal Chaudhary hammered three and Yogendra Acharya scored two. Meanwhile, the Mid Western team's cool headed penalty specialist Dinesh Bista scored six individual goals, four of which came from penalty shots. Mid-West's Bimal Gahatraj hammered three and Sunil Shrestha, Pankaj Shrestha and Amar Raj Sharma scored one goal each. Earlier, Central region beat Far Western region 24-11 in which Central region's Ram Bahadur Thapa struck 11 goals. Thapa received best scorer of the tournament award for his 32 goals scored in whole tournament. Police's Padma Bahadur Nepali was named best player and Mid-west's Akhil Kumar Sharma was adjudged best keeper. Birat Bajracharya, Bishwobam Malla, Samatbal Malla, Prakash Singh Thakuri, Ranjan Bista, Arun Kumar Karna, Jayant Kumar Sharma, Sekhar Chapagai, Aruna Gurung and Geeta Lama were the umpires and scorers of the tournament. Nepalese Congress Central Working Committee member Prakash Man Singh distributed the cup and certificates to the winners and runners up. Other Story |
