Devise strategy to make education futuristic: Koirala Biratnagar, Oct. 29 (RSS): President of the Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has pointed out the need of self-reliant education by taking into consideration the future of the children and by changing the present educational system and policy. Koirala was inaugurating the renovated two rooms of the Sarbahitaishi Primary School at Dangraha Village Development Committee (VDC) ward No. 6 under Morang district constituency No. 6 established by late Krishna Prasad Koirala on 1 Baisakh 1986 Bikram Era. Stating that that as the overall development of the country in Cluding that of the educational sector was not possible on the basis of the old educational system, NC president Koirala further said if the educational system and policy are changed in line with the progress and development in the world, it would be in the interest of the nation, society and the public at large. Koirala said that politicisation has distorted the educational sector and therefore it should be got rid of it and a new educational system formulated. At the funcition, Koirala also gave away prizes and certificates to the teachers working in the school for a very long time and to the students excelling in various fields. At the function, Minister for Education and Sports Amod Prasad Upadhyaya said that the Education (seventh amendment) Bill had been introduced with the objective of revealing the latent talent of the students and for their all round development. Minister Upadhyaya also stated that the bill also aims at making some provisions to prevent the undesired activities in the present system of the examinations. National Assembly member and NC Morang district committee president Ashok Koirala appeal to one and all for the physical and educational development of the school founded by late Krishna Prasad Koirala with the objective of imparting education to the children of the rich and poor alike. NC central member and head of its women wing Mrs Nona Koirala said that education and society are complementary to each other and stressed the need to impart good education to the children. Subalal Majhi, 96, a former student of the school, social activist Satya Narayan Chaudhari, Narayan Prasad Koirala of the Pitaji Krishna Prasad Koirala Council and headmaster Mukunda Narayan Chaudhari also expressed their views on the occasion. Four teenagers held for allegedly pushing drugs BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmandu, Oct. 29: Police arrested four teenagers in separate incidents at 9 A.M. Monday while they were allegedly trying to smuggle in narcotic drugs into the Central Jail. According to police, security personnel found 150 grams of hashish, two sedative (nitro) tablets and 10 grams of white powder during a security check of Deepak Maharjan, 17, resident of Kichapokhari, before he was let inside the jail. Maharjan had gone to visit some inmates. He had kept the contrabands inside a silver box and was trying to get them into the cell. After about four-and-a-half-hours, another visitor Nawang Tshering Sherpa, also 17, of Gairidhara, came to the jail. He, too, was carrying 12 grams of narcotics with him. Similarly, police seized 20 grams of hemp from Suresh Shakya, 15, and three nitrogen tablets from Ravi Shrestha, 17, at 2 P. M. one hour later. Shakya and Shrestha had come from Bhaktapur Municipality Ward No. 7 and 8 respectively. Police is said to be undertaking further investigations about the cases. Meanwhile, police have arrested Govind Bahadur Dulal, 21, of Padam Pokhari VDC of Makawanpur district, for raping a 12-year-old girl on Friday. Police also arrested Bikash Lama, 36, from Salleri VDC Ward No. 5 of Solukhumbu district, for molesting a six-year-old girl at Saraswatisthan, Kathmandu. Local residents had caught Lama and handed him over to the police. The local resident found out Lamas ill intention when the girl cried. Parasis senior citizens deprived of allowance BY OUR CORRESPONDENT Parasi, Oct. 29: Kaushilya Ranabhat, a widow living in Dandajheri of Nawalparasi district, has not been getting the widow allowance for the last three years. Under social security facility, the government has been providing allowances to the elderly people, widows and the helpless persons. Similar is the story of many others in the district. The number of elderly people, widows and helpless persons stand at 3,854, 4,892 and 44 respectively in the district. According to Bishnu Bahadur Rayamajhi, accountant at the District Development Committee (DDC), around Rs. 12.8 million has to be distributed to a total of 8,790 persons under the social security facility annually. "But due to lack of necessary funds, the DDC has not been able to give them the allowances," Rayamajhi says. He said there is a shortage of Rs. 2.1 million to give allowances to those people. He further says the DDC is compelled to distribute the money equally among the stakeholders as there is no enough funds to provide all the amounts of allowance to them. New data show that about 15,000 elderly people are deprived of the old-age allowance. |
