LETTER TO THE EDITOR

 Kathmandu Monday September 10, 2001 Bhadra 25,  2058.

Misleading Article

I am writing this letter in response to the article ‘Bipana judged best actress, thanks to ‘death threat" which was really disturbing and biased in every sense. The writer seems to be a great fan of Niruta Singh and has expressed his distaste about Bipana being chosen as the best Actress for 2058 and thus he has come with some fabricated stories like the name list was changed at the very last moment, death threat and foul play. Being a journalist he should be impartial and he should also understand that without proper proof he should not take one’s side and discard the other like the way he has done. It is not necessary that the same artist should receive the award every year. Why can’t he and the others who think that only Niruta deserved the award realise that Bipana and the other award recipients has also equally worked hard to be in that spot? The number of films (72) and the great response received during the reception of the award by Bipana itself proves the fact that she clearly deserved to be the winner.

If it was the death threat which had urged the organiser and the jury to stop giving Award to the actress from across the boarder then how come the others like, Uttam Pradhan (best new comer award), Tulsi Ghimire (best director award) and Darpan Chaya (best movie award) was not affected by such threat? I personally feel that the Nepalese people have never had such biased attitude towards our Nepalese artistes or any other professionals from across the boarder. Their existence in the field of art or any other field in Nepal is proof enough to show that they have always been welcomed without any biased attitude towards them from people of Nepal. In fact their involvement in so many movies or other forms of work in Nepal where they have made fame fortune is an excellent example of our Nepalese hospitality and support towards them.

In every organisation, in every team or company they have their own sets of rules and regulations and criteria based on which they (judges) come out with the end result and we should learn to respect them. Many were felicitated with the special token for their contribution for the development of Nepali Film but I wasn’t despite having served industry for the past 50 years or more since Adarsha Naari! I am not at all sad because I am in this field only due to my immense love and attraction for art and not just for any awards or title.

Although there were lot of shortcomings during the 4th Motion Picture Awards I would still like to congratulate the organising committee and all those involved in it for trying to make it successful and Grand despite the treacherous road they had to tread on to come to the final day.
