PRIME Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba convened the all-party meeting in Singha Durbar the other day to inform the political parties about the 2nd round of peace talks held between the government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) in Bardiya recently and to chalk out future strategy to end the armed insurgency in the country. In the meeting, chief negotiator of the government Minister Chiranjibi Wagle briefed the representatives of all major national political parties about the 2nd round of peace talks, agenda put forth by the Maoist side and the governments stance. The government representatives had flatly rejected some of the political demands of the Maoists concerning constitutional monarchy, present constitution and interim government. The all-party meeting supported the stance taken by the government in the talks. Parties also agreed to come up with concrete opinion on the future strategy for the peace talks with Maoists in another all-party meeting to be held very soon. Prime Minister Deuba has initiated a positive and healthy exercise and practice to involve all political forces for the resolution of the countrys problems and seek their opinions and suggestions on national issues. This approach of the present government has been well appreciated from all sectors. In fact, this is the essence of democracy and pluralistic system. Involvement and cooperation of all political parties is a must for the resolution of national problems and development of the country. The Maoist insurgency is, no doubt, the most pressing problem of the nation at present, which has already claimed lives of more than 1700 people and damaged property worth millions of rupees in the last six years. Moreover, violent incidents that took place in the name of insurgency have had a negative impact on the national economy and brought development activities to a virtual standstill. Peace is prerequisite for development, for which the ongoing violence and insurgency need to be put to an end. The government has initiated the peace process and dialogue with the Maoists to end the insurgency in a peaceful manner. This is also the desire of the people, political parties and the nation. As the peace process has already been initiated, cooperation and support from all political forces, civil society and the people is highly needed in order to strengthen the position of the government in the talks. Should the peace talks fail, the nation will have to pay a heavy price. Thus, there must a common and collective approach and stance for the resolution of the problem peacefully the motto should be united we stand divided we fall. Other Story |
