Consensus is must for peace: Dhungana

BUTWAL, Dec. 7: Former Speaker Damannath Dhungana has said as the Maoists have been running activities that could devastate Nepal a consensus should be reached for peace. Speaking at a talk programme on "consensus campaign for peace" organised by the Institute of Parliamentary Studies and Development here today, Mr Dhungana said we have to find out a way to bring together the Maoists, the King, the Parliamentarians and the Civil Society.

Stating that the trend of not abiding by the Constitution has led to the present complex situation, Mr Dhungana said an all party political conference has become essential in order to establish a human estate in the country.

Intellectual and expert on foreign affairs Hiranya Lal Shrestha said the peace talks should not taken as a ladder to power but should be held honesty with joint effort of the King, Maoists, political parties and the civil society.

"We need to remain alert of those making effort to take advantage of the situation of conflict", Mr Shrestha said adding that an active participation of the civil society is essential for the dialogue.
Editor of 'Mulyankan' monthly Shyam Shrestha said the present political crisis is a result of the non-fulfillment of people's hope for progress and change.

Chairperson of Appellate Court, Butwal Bar Association Gokarna Singh Thapa said Constituent Assembly only will not resolve the present crisis an honest effort is required for peace talks.
Advocate Tej Prasad Kandel, editor of Lumbini Daily Karna Bahadur Karki, executive editor of Mechikali Daily Siddhicharan Bhattarai and other speakers also expressed their views at the programme chaired by Dr. DB Singh.
