US Assistant Secretary of State to visit Nepal

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca is visiting Nepal from December 12 to 15. According to the American Center in Kathmandu, Rocca plans to meet with various Nepalese officials to discuss issues of bilateral interest.
She is also scheduled to hold consultations with US Embassy staff about the current situation in Nepal.

Rocca last visited Nepal in January during the visit here of US Secretary of State Colin Powell.


Jumla team demands actions

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: A 15 member delegation of Jumla district reconstruction citizens committee met with Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand at Prime Minister's residence, Baluwatar today and requested him to provide co-operation to reconstruct the public houses and offices destroyed during the attack by the Maoist terrorists in the district headquarters.

The delegation demanded the guarantee of law and order in the district, allocation of budget for the construction of the government offices, open the offices including the Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank and Land Revenue Offices immediately in the district.


Main political parties ready for elections

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: The main political parties in the country have said that if Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand announces a date for elections they are ready to participate in the polls, and in order to create a suitable environment for this, Maoists should give up violence and killings.
Speaking at a Face to Face programme organised by the Reporters' Club Nepal here, they said elections are the only democratic way out and they were prepared to help the government in that direction.

Nepali Congress central member Baldev Sharma Majgaiya said they were prepared for elections if the Maoists gave up violence and killings.

TU, MSU results

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: Tribhuvan University today published the results of the Masters Level first year (old group) examinations held in 2059 B.S. under the Faculty of Law. Similarly, the Mahendra Sanskrit University has published the results of the Shastri (Bachelor's) level second year regular/partial and independent annual examinations administered last Bhadau/Asoj. Likewise, the results of the Shastri first, second and third part special examinations have also been published.

Also, the results of the Master's level first year, second part regular examinations (2058 batch) in renewable energy, water resources, environmental and power system engineering conducted by Tribhuvan University Institute of Engineering last Kattik/Mangsir have been published.


Sharma blames dishonesty for political crisis

RAJBIRAJ, Dec. 11: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Kuber Prasad Sharma has said that Nepali politics lacks honesty.

Addressing the concluding function of the third national conference of Srihanuman Aradhana Mandal at Rampur Jamuwa VDC of Saptari district today, Minister Sharma expressed the view that the extensive misappropriation of funds in the name of people's representatives in the past hindered development work.

Since the Maoists are atheists and are indulging in the politics of the gun they will never become successful, he said.Some 7,000 representatives from 1,300 units of the Mandal took part in the conference.


Country in critical situation, says Shah

JANAKPURDHAM, Dec. 11: Assistant Minister for Local Development Dr. Asarfi Saha has said that the monarchy has always taken decision in accordance with the wishes of the people.
Giving directives to the employees of Dhanusha district here today he said the country is in such a critical situation due to the rampant corruption therefore the civil servants should discharge their responsibilities in a transparent and effective manner.

Dr. Shah stressed the need to bring the youths involved in the terrorist activities to the right path by making an appropriate strategy. On the occasion, Chief District Officer Babu Ram Lamichhane said that the civil servants were ready to work in accordance with the policy of the government.
Meanwhile, Assistant Minister for Local Development Dr. Asarfi Saha said peace is necessary for the development of a country.

He was handing over sub-health posts to local bodies at Pipara VDC at a function organised by the district public health office Mahottari and DDC, yesterday. Saha said the civil society and government should together counter the destructive acts of the terrorists who attack on development infrastructures.

At the function presided over by Jaleswor hospital chief Dr. Ram Lakhan Saha, various other speakers including CDO Bimal Prasad Dhakal, LDO Krishna Chandra Ghimire, Ishwor Narayan Pandey and Birendra Kumar Mishra also expressed their views.

Altogether 818 sub-health posts were handed over on the occasion. Similarly, Saha also inspected the embankment constructed at Ratu river by Jaleswor Municipality and the DDC Mahottari.


WTO threats, opportunities discussed

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: As Nepal is approaching to the "final stage" to obtain the membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), industrialists, bureaucrats and other stakeholders today discussed various threats and opportunities. They said Nepal should identify the areas in which it can take more benefits. At a programme organised by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) in association of Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies and HMG/N -UNDP Nepal Accession to WTO Programme, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of MoICS Prachand Man Shrestha said that the government is doing homework on tariff so as to make it more WTO compatible.

Dr. Posh Raj Pandey, Chief of the WTO Programme informed that the Nepal has tried to maximize benefits in different areas including service sector, and tariff structure. Second vice president of the FNCCI Rajendra Khetan stressed the need for identifying the areas of comparative benefits.


Two arrested on charge of murder

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: A police team led by Police Inspector Dol Raj Shahi of Valley Crime  Investigation Department has recently arrested two persons on charge of murdering Sanjay Khadgi, who was living in Hanatole Kathmandu. Khadgi was killed two months ago in his residence. Police have arrested Chakradhoj Bamjan, 24 from Thankot and Arjun Balami, 20 from Bhaktapur. Police said that Arjun told he used an iron rod and a tea-bowl to kill Khadgi. While Chakradhoj carried the dead body of Khadgi in doko (a basket made of bamboo) and threw into the Bishnumati River, 15 meter far from the place of murder, Bamjan told police in his statement.

Police have also confiscated the iron rod and tea-bowl that was used for killing Khadgi. Arjun was from Makawanpur and Chakradhoj was from Sindhuli districts, both of them presently residing in Hanatole, Kathmandu.Police have started further investigations of the case and legal actions against the accused persons.


Regional meet on food control system ends

KATHMANDU, Dec. 11: The South Asian regional meeting on modernising food control systems wound up today adopting various decisions and recommendations on food safety in the region.
At a press brief after the meeting, Ezzeddine Boutrif, Senior Officer at the FAO said that hygienic food supplies to the people to protect the rights of the consumers should not be ignored.

The meet also discussed the latest food safety tools and food control systems and focused on ways to enhance regional cooperation in areas of food safety and nutrition in the region,'' he said. He added that the meeting also recommended seven-point plan of actions for the upcoming year. The main point of the action plan is to harmonise the number of parameters in standard to the extent possible with Codex-an international body of FAO.

The meeting has asked to facilitate harmonisation in each country should send comments on its willingness to accept Codex standards where available, and it should be sent to the concerned body of FAO.

The meeting has also stressed for the need to review and regulate the modernisation of food control laws .
