Electronic Media Development

MEDIA has a big role to play in democracy as is seen by its development in the country in the past twelve years. The media whether print or electronic has an important function because without it the right to information cannot be enjoyed. Stifling of news or views is not compatible with the democratic political set up that is being followed in the country. It is only recently that strides have been taken towards making the media stronger unlike in the past. Since 1990, the country has seen the emergence of the private sector print and electronic media come to the fore. This was a development which was in tune of the spirit and the letter of the constitution. The increasing number of broadsheets, weeklies, FM radio stations and TV channels indicate that more people have access to information than in the past. But herein it is important to mention that the media must also act responsibly both in the interest of the people and the country. A sense of irresponsibility leads to misinformation and the wrong conception among the readers or listeners. Informing, entertaining and educating are important tasks and they have to be fulfilled sincerely without at any time deviating from the norms and the concerned code of conduct. The principles have to be adhered to. In this respect, the electronic media has to have a greater sense of responsibility.

Minister for Information and Communications Ramesh Nath Pandey, speaking at an interaction programme organised by the Nepal Cable TV Association, informed that the present government is moving ahead for the development of the electronic media. A team of experts has been formed and its report will revolve around today's demands and future challenges, Minister Pandey said. When it comes to the entertainment part, care has to be taken as it is sensitive. A small mistake on the part of the electronic media can lead to great repercussions. A few events in the recent past are fit examples of which everyone is aware. This suggests that the government is aware to the need for the development of the electronic media taking into consideration the interest of the people and the country. Suitable and timely rules and regulations have to be formulated and implemented. This is important if the pace of development of the electronic media is to be enhanced.
