The preaching of different holy scripts clearly give the message that respecting the feminine gender is in fact respecting our own humankind. It is often said that the Gods are happy where women are respected. Since time immemorial, it has been a practice in our society to look down upon women. The patriarchal model of our society is primarily thought to be responsible for the prevailing gender discrimination. Women in Nepal have rendered their valuable support, be it at the time of unification of the country or the time of the popular movement. After the restoration of democracy there has been a visible change in the way women in our society are treated. We have finally realised that national development would be a distant dream without encompassing the women who comprise half of the countrys population. Though the message is being taken heed of by policy makers and planners, we still need to step up the campaign to bring women in mainstream of development by ensuring that they are not exploited.
