Sports journalists honoured

Kathmandu, July 2: The South Asian Sports Journalist Association, Nepal (SASJAN) marked the International Sport Journalist day today by honouring two sports photojournalists at a function.

Raj Sabha Standing Committee Chairman Dr. Keshar Jung Rayamajhi presented cash prizes and letters of felicitation to two photojournalists Shyam Chitrakar and Samagya Lacoul.

Chitrakar is a free-lance photographer while Lacoul is with a monthly magazine Sports and Leisure and is also the vice president of the SASJAN.

Speaking at the function, Dr Rayamajhi threw light on the importance of sports and sports journalists. He said that without the write-ups of journalists, sports lose importance. Rayamajhi congratulated the journalists who received the awards today.

Minister of State for Education and Sports N.P. Saud said that the sport is one of important aspect of modern life. Sports get important places even in the big newspapers of the world, he said.

Saud said that despite the country facing difficult time, the government is still ready to undertake sports development programmes. He said that the government is mulling to provide employment to the players winning gold medals in the 8th SAAF Games held in Kathmandu in 1999.

At the function, SASJAN president IM Singh said that the International Association for Sports Press has been observing July 2 as the world Sports journalist day from 1995. The Association’s headquarter is situated in Budapest of Hungary and has 143 countries as its members.

Bisnu Nisthuri, General Secretary of Federation for Nepalese Journalists, said that SASJAN has done an exemplary work by honouring the journalists.
