Shangri-La golf on March 9

Kathmandu, March 5: The Shangri-La Golf Tournament is all set to tee-off on 9th March 2002 at the Gleneagles Golf Course at the Gokarana Forest Golf Resort.

About 120 golfers, both Nepalese and Nepal based foreigners along with some from abroad will take part in the second edition of the tournament. Over a hundred golfers have already enrolled their names as participants. The tournament will be held in stable ford ¾ handicap basis.

These golfers, according to organisers, would vie for prizes that range from trips to Vienna and Mumbai and other trophies for the different categories. The different airlines operating in Nepal such as Austrian Airlines, Royal Nepal Airlines, Necon Air, Buddha Air along with a resort Temple Tiger are sponsoring the one-day meet to be played at the lush Gokarana Forest.

The tournament is aimed at promoting golf in the country which currently possessed an internationally acclaimed golf course in Gokarana golf resort, Pravin Pandey of the Shangri-La Hotel said at a press conference held this afternoon.

With the announcement of the tournament, we also want to convey the message that the country is safe for playing golf, which will also help boost the tourism in the nation, said Pandey.

The tournament will be all –day event. Coinciding with the tournament will be another event at the Hotel Shangri-La-the launch of its platinum elite card to the local resident as well as other community living in Nepal.

The tournament site, Gokarna Forest Golf Resort has held about twenty national and international golf tournaments in the past three years and has now tied up with Hotel Shangri-La to make the present tournament as one of the premium tournament, Deepti Rana, Marketing Officer at Gokarana Golf Course said at the press meet.

Gokarana pro golfer Deepak Acharya said that the tournament had gained the status of one of the important golf meets in the capital. Deepak Uprety of the Hotel highlighted the Platinum Elite card.
