Fruitful Talks

THE much-awaited talks between Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and President of the United States of America George W. Bush were held the other day at the Oval Office in the White House. As expected by the Nepalese people, the two leaders discussed matters related to bilateral relations and ongoing cooperation against terrorism. In course of the talks the two leaders reportedly reiterated their respective countries' determination to defeat all forms and manifestations of terrorism. Coincidentally, Prime Minister Deuba's US visit happened to be at the time when the governments of both the countries are fighting terrorism. Following the September 11 attack the US government has launched a global campaign against terrorism whereas His Majesty's the Government is now in its decisive fight against the Maoist terrorists. In fact, the United States has always been a great friend of Nepal. It has been one of the important development partners of Nepal since decades. Presently, Nepal is in the crisis mainly due to the violent insurgencies initiated by the Maoists and the US government's willingness to support Nepal in its fight against Maoist terrorists is very significant. The frequent visits to Nepal made by the different high ranking US officials last year and Secretary of the State Colin Powell's visit a few months back speak the US government's willingness to support Nepal in its fights against terrorism. Moreover, the US government's recent announcement of an assistance package to Nepal further underlined the importance it attaches to consolidating Nepal's multi-party democracy and development activities. It is a matter of satisfaction that Prime Minister Deuba got an opportunity to meet President Bush and other American to discuss the problems faced by the country. Certainly, Nepal which is now waging war against the terrorists need more support from the international communities to achieve its goal. President Bush's assurance of continue support to Nepal's fight against terrorism and strengthening and safeguarding democracy indicates that Prime Minister 's US visit is absolutely successful. Indeed, the motif behind Prime Minister's US visit was to seek all sorts of supports from the latter in defeating the Maoist terrorists and Premier Deuba has been successful in his mission. As such all peace loving Nepalese people should feel happy towards the US government's constant support to Nepal.
