FAO regional meet to be held in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, May 8 (RSS): The 26th FAO Asia and the Pacific regional conference is to be held in Kathmandu from May 13 to 17.

The major biannual event, to be held for the first time in Nepal, takes stock of and makes policy recommendations on key food and agriculture issues affecting Asia and the Pacific region.

This was informed at a press conference organised here on Tuesday.

The conference will focus on measures to speed up progress in the region towards attaining the goals of the World Food Summit of reducing hunger levels by half by the year 2015.

The regional conference to be attended by 40 FAO members and two observer nations will produce an Asia-Pacific perspective for the World Food Summit to be held in June, five years later after the gathering of world leaders at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

It is said that out of the 800 million population in the world grappling with food insecurity, the Asian continent alone has 500 million people. Nepal's chunk is about 5 million.
