Substantive equality needed for justice, equity: CJ

LALITPUR, Nov. 16: Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhyaya inaugurated the 11th national seminar of women law practitioners on the role and initiative of woman law practitioners in legal assistance here today.

The two day seminar is attended by about 140 law practitioners from Pokhara, Jhapa, Butwal, Makawanpur, Rajbiraj, Morang, Chitwan Rupandehi, Saptari, Mahendranagar and Tanahun.
Though there are about 200 women law practitioners in Nepal, all have not been able to come to this profession, it is said.

On the occasion Chief Justice Upadhyaya stressed the need to provide equal justice to women to create a just and equitable society in the country by providing equal access to the law.

Former minister Shubhash Chandra Nembang, former president of the Nepal Bar Association Harihar Dahal, advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari, Sushmita Singh Karki and Norwegian representative Vidar Raugland also expressed their views on the occasion.

The programme was chaired by president of the Nepal Bar Association Sindhu Nath Pyakurel.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Upadhyaya inaugurated a two day woskshop seminar on 'criminal procedure manual' here today.

The workshop seminar organised by judges society of Nepal for the district judges of the Mid Western Development Region and the Far Western Development Region is also being attended by public prosecutors, representatives of the Bar Association and police officer of the regions as observers.
The workshop seminar on criminal procedure manual, which is prepared with the co-operation of the human rights and good governance programme of the Denmark government and the Supreme Court of Nepal, has been completed in other development regions.

On the occasion, Chief Justice Upadhyaya said the judges should develop logical and creative skills while implementing and explanation of law, precedence and theory and think of its background to deliver real justice to the people.

Stating that a task force has been formed under the chairmanship of attorney general keeping in view the need of modernisation of the criminal law in accordance with the changed context of the world, the Chief Justice said the judges should be able to deliver the justice in an effective manner.

Chairman of the society and the justice of the Supreme Court Harishchandra Upadhyaya and the registrar of the Supreme Court and secretary of the society Shree Prasad Pundit also expressed their views on criminal procedure manual.
