Regional workshop on watershed management

KATHMANDU, Nov. 19: A three day seminar on "Regional Workshop on Watershed Management: A South Asian Perspective" began here today with a view to sharing of ideas and experience in the field of watershed management among the member countries of the SAARC region.

A total of 30 participants from the SAARC countries including Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan, Srilanka, Bhutan and India have been participating in the seminar which is organised for the first time in Nepal.
Inaugurating the seminar, Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Badri Narayan Basnet said the main priority of Nepal's watershed management policy is to help in poverty alleviation and conservation of land through the mobilisation of the human and natural resources.

He also stressed the need to encourage the local people to use the locally available resources and skills for watershed management of the country in an effective manner.

From the chair, Secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation Chandi Prasad Shrestha said our efforts on soil and watershed management should be seen at broader perspective and planned for long term sustainability at national and regional levels.

Sharing of ideas and experiences in the field of watershed management among the member countries of the SAARC region is utmost important at this juncture, he said.

Chief planning officer Dr. Mohan Prasad Wagle and acting director general of the Department of Land and Watershed Management Bishnu Das Shrestha shed light on various aspects of the seminar.
