Media should carry materials on poor RSS BUTWAL, Nov. 22: A two-day workshop for the editors of the daily newspapers got underway here today. The objectives of the workshop are to hold discussions on innovative ideas on taking journalism ahead in the days to come, situation of manpower, needs and of the newspapers in order to meet the growing demands of readable materials. Forty-two editors are taking part in the workshop jointly hosted by Nepal Press Institute and the Rupandehi district branch of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists. Senior journalist and general secretary of Nepal Press Institute Bharat Dutta Koirala, at the workshop, said that it was necessary to give preference to the materials that take ahead journalism and help support the poor persons at the local level at a time when newspapers were seen to be concentrated in the municipal areas. Senior journalist P. Kharel expressed concern over the indifference among readers because of the preference accorded to news items of similar nature and pointed out the need for daily newspapers to provide news at the local level with credibility and innovation coupled with the presentation of its distinct identification. Senior journalist Dhruva Adhikari said it was necessary to provide distinct style to the news that should be grammatically correct with simplicity, and revealing the sources of news. FNJ central vice-president Badri Vinod Prateek laid emphasis on investigative and innovative news in the present scenario when print media had to compete stiffly with the electronic media. Training director of Nepal Press Institute Chiranjivi Khanal pointed out the need for the newspapers to ponder over how to move ahead in a new way. Chairman of Radio Lumbini and senior journalist Arjun Gyawali expressed concern over the violation of the code of conduct more by the radios than the newspapers. Chief editor of Yugbodh daily Narayan Sharma, editor of Lumbini Daily Karna Bahadur Karki, chief editor of Janasanghursha Daily Balkrishna Chapagai, and chairman of Himalayan News Agency Vinod Pahadi also expressed their views at the workshop chaired by FNJ Rupandehi district branch president Balkrishna Chapagai. FNCCI appoints trade envoy to Japan By A Staff Reporter KATHMANDU, Nov 22: The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI)- the apex body of private sector has initiated the process of appointing FNCCI-Honorary Trade Envoy to various countries. With the objective of enhacing trade and economic relations with various countries, the FNCCI has appointed Devman Hirachan as the FNCCI - Trade Envoy to Japan. According to the FNCCI, the federation has already appointed Ian Hongdeng at the FNCCI envoy to China. The federation believes that appointment of trade envoy will help promote ties with the private sector in various countries. Acting president of the FNCCI Binod Bahadur Shrestha, presented certificate of representation to Hirachan at a programe here today. Shrestha while presenting the certificate to Hirachan expressed belief that his appointment would help trade and economic ties with Japan. Shrestha further said that the federation would take further steps to appoint trade envoy to other countries as well. The federation is striving for further developing trade ties with Japan by establishing Nepal-Japan Economic Group, he added. No significant impact on bullion market By A Staff Reporter KATHMANDU, Nov 22: The local bullion market has experienced a partial effect following the improvement in the major international stock market. The increase in the price of share in the international market has triggered no significant impact in the bullion market, this month, according to Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association (NGSDA). The price of yellow metal in the Nepalese bullion market has
not increased so far. There has been a slight increase in the price of gold this week,
said Rajendra Tuladhar, secretary of NGSDA. Another reason for partial impact in the
bullion market is the weak state of the green back, said Tuladhar. RSS KATHMANDU, Nov. 22: Chief of Enabling State Programme (ESP) of Nepal Michael Lowe, director of PRI, South Asian regional office Sunil Nanda, programme coordinator of Esp Bandana Risal and national consultant of PRI Rabindra Bhattarai met Home Minister Dharma Bahadur Thapa today and discussed various aspect of reforms in prison and punishment. On the occasion, Home Minister Thapa said education and training that benefit prisoners will be continued and expressed the view that prison alternatives like open prison and community service are very good. Nepali literature award set in US capital RSS BIRATNAGAR, Nov. 22: The International Nepali Literature Society in Washington D. C. has instituted an award in three different genres with an objective of spreading Nepali literature in the International Arena. The 'international Nepali Literature Society Best Literary Work Award' will be given for the first time in 2003 and has a purse of Rs. 50,000 and a letter of honour. The 'best Women Litterateur Award' will have a purse of Rs. 20,000 and a letter of honour established in the name of late Dilli Ram Timsina. Similarly, the best new talent award established in the name of Dilli Ram Timsina has Rs. 15, 000 and a letter of honour. The three awards will be given each two years for books published within two years before the year of awarding, the society informed. |
