Education For Development

MINISTER for Education and Sports Devi Prasad Ojha called upon the students and other concerned people to engage themselves in utilising their skill and knowledge effectively in order to bring about social and economic changes in the society. Addressing a function held in Kathmandu, on the occasion of the Ninth Convocation Day of the Tribhuvan University, the other day, Minister Ojha and other scholars lauded the role of Tribhuvan University (TU) in creating educated and skilled human manpower in the country and stressed on the need of enhancing the role and responsibility of the educated population in guiding and moulding the behavior of the people for the positive development of the society. It is true that any nation can only develop and prosper when it has adequate educated and skilled human resource. Tribhuvan University is the pioneer institution in the sector of higher education in Nepal and its role in creating educated human resource has been immense. More than 90 per cent of today's educated and skilled people are the graduates of the Tribhuvan University. However, questions concerning the quality of education has been very prominently raised by educationists. Despite its big role in the higher education sector, the Tribhuvan University lacks adequate funds for the improvement of its physical facilities and academic environment. The lack of funds has to some extent affected its academic atmoshpehere. In order to improve the quality of Nepal's higher education, Tribhuvan University must be financially well equipped so that it can concentrate on quality education without any constraints. Apart from the resource constraints, Tribhuvan University is seemingly affected by political pressure and intervention. Since its inception, the Tribhuvan University has been functioning as an independent and autonomous body, concentrating on academic activities. The last few years have seen interventions from the political party in power, which has, to a large extent, caused deterioration in the quality of education. We must understand that if quality of Tribhuvan University deteriorates, the quality of the entire education system of Nepal is bound to be affected. TU is an instituion that should that must be free from any political pressure. The leadership of the Tribhuvan University now has the double responsibility of resisting political pressure and making it financially sound and better in order to impart quality education.
