'No doubts regarding multiparty democracy'

KATHMANDU, Oct. 11: Chairman of the Raj Parishad Standing Committee Dr. Keshar Jung Rayamajhi has said there is no need for anyone to raise doubts regarding multi-party democracy in Nepal on the basis of the views expressed by His Majesty the King through the Royal Promulgation to the nation.

Inaugurating a seminar on 'Broadcasting Council for F.M. Stations' organised by the Society of Independent Journalists with the support of the Fredereich Ebert Stiftung here Wednesday, he said His Majesty the King has exercised the powers enshrined in the constitution in view of the present unfavourable situation in the country.

He also made it clear that as politicians who will contest elections are likely to influence the election process, His Majesty the King has, through the Royal Address, asked the political parties to recommend to His Majesty people with clean image who would not contest in the elections as prime ministerial candidates.

Chairman Rayamajhi said since the present situation in the country was an outcome of the violence and killings going on in the country, all sides should be equally responsible and conscious regarding elimination of this problem.

Senior journalist P. Kharel said that freedom should be guaranteed to the broadcast media with a new agenda and programme.

Secretary of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) Mahendra Bista, shedding light on various problems faced by the media, said that the FNJ was thinking about constituting a high level communications media council.

President of the Sancharika Samuha Bandana Rana pointed out the need for giving emphasis to women participation also while formulating policies and programmes for different sectors, including media.

From the chair, president of Society of Independent Journalists Jeeb Ram Bhandari opined that journalism should not become the sister organisation of the political parties.
