Parties urged to field 33% women candidates

KATHMANDU, Sept. 6: Various woman leaders and representatives of the institutions and organisations associated with women have demanded that the political parties should field of 33 per cent of women candidates for the elections to be held on November 13.

At a face to face programme organised by the Reporters Club of Nepal in the capital today, woman leaders said that there was no option other than holding elections, which should be utilised in the interest of women and called upon the Maoists to lay down arms and take part in the elections.
Mina Pandey of the Nepali Congress said that women should reach the policy formulation level for poverty alleviation, educational development and economic prosperity.

Another NC leader and president of Nepal Women Association Uma Adhikari said that during the term of the present government, National Women's Commission had been constituted, and bills on women's right to inheriting property and prevention of domestic violence adopted and these were concrete steps in the protection of the women's rights and interest.

She expressed the commitment that the Nepali Congress would field 33 per cent women candidate in the forthcoming elections.

CPN-UML central member and president of all Nepal Women Association Bidya Bhandari said that process of reservation should be made in politics to provide suitable opportunities to them and ensure their participation in the national mainstream.

Leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and vice-president of National Women's Commission Pratibha Rana said that the prime reason of backwardness of women was their inability to reach the policy framing level.

Sarita Giri, a leader of the Nepal Party, said that providing opportunities to women in fields directly concerning them such as agriculture, poverty alleviation and water supply would yield positive results.
Leader of Janamorcha Nepal Shashi Shrestha and advocate Sapana Pradhan Malla also expressed their views at the programme chaired by Club president Rishi Dhamala.
