Rambir Blitz chess from Sept.13

KATHMANDU: Makhan Chess Game Committee (MCGC) will organise the two-day Rambir Memorial Blitz Chess competition from September 13.

The matches, to be played at Tarini Bahal, at Makhan, will each be of 15-minute duration. According to President of the Committee Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, the tournament will have about 64 players , including present and former Nepal chess champions.

The rapid-fire chess tournament will also help end the wrong conception about chess as the game of inert. The first four players will receive cash prizes along with citation, Shrestha said.

MCGC that was constituted after the sudden death of Rambir Shrestha, the then secretary of Nepal Chess Association had also organised Rambir Memorial Chess tournament last year.

President Shrestha said that the tournament will cost about Rs. 30,000 which has been collected from the locals of Makhan. " We have not received a single penny from the National Sports Council though we have requested it many times," Shrestha said.

Former MP Mangalsiddhi Manandhar had provided Rs. 31,000 to buy a computer to help train new and aspiring chess players. At the press meet, MCGC Secretary Sumir Lama, former Nepal chess champion Navin Tandukar, Badri Nepali, Punyaman Karmacharya and Sita Ram Agrawal expressed their views.
