Welcome US Assistance

IN the past seven years the Maoist insurgency has played a havoc with the development infrastructure in the country. The pace of destruction of public building including police posts, post offices, VDC offices and so on has gone unabated. This naturally means a great loss for a country which is struggling to keep pace with the global standard of prosperity. Nepal as such faces paucity of funds which is why the development activities in the past were not up to the mark. The destruction campaign unleashed by the Maoists has led to losses in billions of rupees. The infrastructure, built over the years with great difficulty, have been turned into rubble in a matter of hours. There can be no other greater tragedy that the nation faces than seeing its development endeavours hampered by the ruthless Maoists. The government is still determined to bring the Maoists under control so that peace and security can return to the country. The security forces including the army have been carrying out their duty to the nation in this hour of crisis. They must be sincerely praised for their unflinching loyalty to the nation.

Friendly nations like the United States of America has always extended support for Nepal in its fight against terrorism. The US government has, recently, agreed to provide a grant assistance of US $ 14.3 million to Nepal for promoting peace through improved governance and incomes in targetted areas of Nepal. The agreement to this effect was signed and exchanged between the officiating secretary of the Ministry of Finance Narayan Prasad Silwal and, US Ambassador to Nepal Michael E. Malinowski and Joanne T. Hale, mission director of USAID Nepal. This is a very generous gesture going by the fact that USA has always remained a true friend of Nepal and especially by spearheading the war against terrorism. The mutual understanding and cooperation between Nepal and the USA is many decades old and the friendly ties have strengthened over the years. This is not the first assistance of its kind to Nepal from the USA but it shows that such help will be forthcoming in the future as well. It indicates the concern of the the USA for peace and security to prevail in Nepal.
