THE comparision between the pen and the sword has been made since ages. The sword stands as a symbol of violence while the pen is the source of inspiration and helps in changing the nature of thinking of the people at large. It is through literature that philosophers, great thinkers, scientists and others have made known revealing thoughts to the people. If it had not been for such people, the civilisation that we know and are a part of which would not have been possible. Whether it is religion, culture, history etc, they are published and promoted through the pen. The principle of non-violence the need of which is the greatest at the moment when the world is wracked by violence was propagated by great sages like Lord Buddha stands as valid today as it was over 2,500 years ago. The names of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi too must be remembered in this context. In all the message of peace must flow all throughout especially in Nepal which is undergoing great pangs of unnecessary violence and destruction. Universal amity and unity is the need of the hour. But, unfortunately, a peaceful country like Nepal too is going through difficult times because of terrorist perpetrated violence. The South Asian region too as a whole has many problems to face including poverty and the fangs of terrorism. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, while inaugurating the Fifth SAARC Writers' Conference, in Kathmadu, the other day, underlined the fact that the writers represent the significant section of the civil society and they have helped enhance a sense of kinship and consciousness in the region. This was a very significant remark as the writers have followed the ideals and values that are necessary for the civilisation as a whole leave aside any country. They are the ones who have the power to make the people aware of the various anomalies in the society. This helps open the eyes of those who move in the wrong path. The meeting of the SAARC writers with the theme "Striving for Cultural Connectivity and Peace" itself shows how the writers themselves are for peace not only in this region but the world over. It is peace and security that is of utmost importance in the present times and the gathering of the SAARC writers will definitely contribute in the return of peace all around. Other Story |
