HM inaugurates Chamber jubilee function

KATHMANDU, Sept. 27: His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev inaugurated a special function marking the golden jubilee celebration of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, at Birendra International Conference Center today. Her Majesty Queen Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah also graced the function.On the occasion, His Majesty presented medals and letters of commendation to l4 living founder chairmen and members who made a special contribution to the chamber movement and the upliftment of the industry and commerce sector and to l4 founder chairmen and members posthumously.

His Majesty the King was offered a letter of felicitation, presents and a golden jubilee souvenir publication at the function.Their Majesties the King and Queen observed with keen interest a special room reflecting the activities of the chamber.Their Majesties also granted audience to industrialists and businessmen.

Speaking at the function, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said that following the adoption of a policy of economic liberalisation by His Majesty's Government, the role of the private sector in the development of industry and the main economic sectors of the country had increased.

Disclosing that the government is working on an industrial policy, a foreign investment policy, a long term industrial plan and a policy on competition to promote the role of industry and commerce, he said it is taking initiative to control non-quality imports and bring the dry port in Birgunj into operation as soon as possible.

Stating that steps are also being taken towards the operation of transport facilities between Nepal and India to facilitate growth in business and industry and simplify movements into the country, he expressed the view that the talks held with various countries recently on giving continuity to efforts to seek world trade organisation membership were positive. Nepal Chamber of Commerce chairman Rajesh Kazi Shrestha said economic development would make strides if progress could be realised in terms of peace, security, good governance and control of corruption.

Chamber vice chairman Surendra Bir Malakar spoke about chamber activities. Also present on the occasion were the Chief Justice, the chairman of the Raj Parishad Standing Committee, heads of foreign diplomatic missions, ministers, MPs, industrial and business entrepreneurs and senior HMG officials.

Set up as the business circle in 2007 Bikram era through the inspiration of His late Majesty King Tribhuvan soon after the advent of democracy, it was formally registered two years later as the All Nepal Business Association. The name was changed to Nepal Chamber of Commerce at its first annual general meeting.

More than l0,000 firms, companies and organisations are currently associated with the chamber including l,237 ordinary members.
