Musahars survive on misery, neglect RSS UDAYAPUR, Beltar, Apr. 15: The Mushahars, who claim to be the descendants of ancient Hindu saints, are still illiterate, poverty-stricken and can't say even the date of their children's birth. They are still following the traditional profession of fishing, ploughing, cattle herding, shepherding, who live in small huts crowded together at one place. They still take reference to some special natural events like the great earthquake, the flood, landslides to count date as they have a different concept of date and times. The tribes people, often treated as untouchables and have nearly a zero per cent literacy rate, have a declining population of about 7,000. They are found living in the jungle sides and river banks of Terai belt of Udayapur district. The tribes-people, who follow the Hindu religion, take Dinaram Bhadri as the centre of their faith and reverence. They hesitate to stretch hands for something and never live on begging even if they are to die of hunger, which shows their family specific orientation towards work. The people show no any concern for the legal and formal things like the registration of birth, death, receiving citizenship certificate, schooling their children. Various organisations, government, NGOs, INGOs are to launch effective programmes to develop and promote the Mushahar people's situation in the area, social worker Ram Chandra KC said.
