KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that his party has been grief-stricken on hearing of the demise today of Sanghanayak Bhikshu Aniruddha Mahasthbir.
In a condolence message, general secretary Nepal has stated that Bhikshu Aniruddha played a pioneering role in the propagation of Buddhism in Nepal and he was also well versed in Nepali, Nepalbhasha, Sinhali, Pali and Sanskrit as well as English. Extending heartfelt condolences to the grief stricken people and the Buddhist community, Nepal has paid homage to the late Sanghanayak.


Meet discusses SAARC convention on child welfare

KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare organised a workshop here today to shed light on the state of implementation of the SAARC Level Convention on Control of Trafficking of Women and Children for Prostitution and the Convention on Child Welfare.

The two conventions were passed by the 11th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Summit held in Kathmandu last year.

It was disclosed on the occasion that Nepal has completed all the work as per law for the ratification of the two conventions.

Bangladesh, Bhutan and the Maldives have already ratified the conventions while other SAARC countries have made preparations for ratification, it is learnt.

The conventions were forwarded to the SAARC Forum by Nepal with the objective of checking at the regional level the trafficking of women and children.

At present, Nepal has been preparing a 13-point policy and a national work plan based on the policy aimed at checking trafficking of women and children for prostitution.

Speaking at the programme, secretary at the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare Vijaya Raj Bhattarai disclosed that a stern law is being formulated to punish those involved in the trafficking of women and girls for prostitution.

Under secretary Kiran Raj Sharma said Nepal has forwarded the conventions because regional cooperation is essential to check prostitution.

Speakers at the programme pointed out the need to establish a separate fund for the rehabilitation of women involved in prostitution as the convention is not clear on this aspect.


CIAA chief studies filed graft cases

ITAHARI, Feb. 17: A team led by chief commissioner of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Suryanath Upadhyaya today studied the files of cases relating to corruption registered at the district administration office, Sunsari.

The team comprising chief commissioner Upadhyaya, commissioner Madhav Dutta Bhatta and joint secretary Dinesh Chandra Regmi studied the nature of the cases filed at the court.

On the occasion Upadhyaya directed that a thorough study of the complaints registered be made, stern action taken against the guilty and the innocent cleared.

He also emphasised the need to carry out public work in a transparent manner and to always remain active so as to not give any trouble to the public.

On the occasion, chief district officer Thaneswor Devkota said corruption-related cases registered at the office are being studied and that they would soon be decided upon.

Also in Itahari, chief commissioner Upahdyaya stated that as it is said there is rampant corruption in the country and employees had a main role in it, civil servants should work honestly to safeguard their self-esteem.

Chief commissioner Upadhyaya said that corruption occurred whether work is done or not and issued directives to the employees to work sincerely and with dedication.

Issuing directives to the chiefs of offices of Sunsari district at Inaruwa, he said that during the course of investigations, it had been noticed that more cases of corruption took place at the land revenue, survey, water supply, customs, telecommunications, police offices and offices issuing citizenship cards.

Stating that everyone should perform his assigned task honestly, chief commissioner Upadhyaya said that instead of talking big, the employees should perform the task of the people in a simple manner.
On the occasion, CIAA commissioner Madhav Dutta Bhatta said that newspapers and other periodicals are the main sources of information concerning corruption and the CIAA considered the anonymous complaints also as a source of information. Chief district officer Shthaneshwar Devkota also expressed his views on the occasion.


Supports to Nepal win award in Japan

KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: A function was held in Matsumoto City, 200 kilometres west of Tokyo, yesterday veining to celebrate the receipt of the award from the Ministry of Public Management, the Government of Japan by Matsumoto City for the Construction of Multi-Purpose Martial Arts Centre in Kathmandu city as a contribution to international friendship.

The centre was built by donations from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Matsumoto City and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Japan.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor of Matsumoto City Tadashi Aruga expressed his happiness for the successful completion of the Multi-Purpose Martial Arts Centre in Kathmandu.

He further expressed his hope that the centre will be imparting various forms of martial arts techniques to the Nepali youth in future.

Aruga also remarked that Nepal is a beautiful country and Nepalese people are very friendly and warm.

Charge D'affairs Mohan Krishna Shrestha, the Royal Nepalese Embassy in Tokyo thanked the Mayor of Matsumoto City Aruga and other related persons for their painstaking efforts to construct the above centre in Kathmandu.

Mr. Shrestha further said that the centre will remain as a symbol of deepening friendship between the people of Nepal and Japan.

He also highlighted about many beautiful aspects of Nepal for tourism purposes and said the tourists, irrespective of their age, can visit Nepal and enjoy indulging in many tourism and culture related activities.

About 80 Japanese distinguished people from Matsumoto City attended the function.


French envoy calls on Shrestha

KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: French Ambassador Claude Ambrossini paid a courtesy call on Assistant Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ravi Bhakta Shrestha at the latter's office today.
Matters relating to mutual interest and co-operation and French assistance to tourism promotion in Nepal were discussed during the meeting.

Assistant Minister Shrestha on the occasion expressed gratitude to the French government for the assistance being provided to the socio-economic development of Nepal and to historic and archaeological regions through the Kavre Integrated Project.


RPP says it's positive on ceasefire

KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party, in a press statement here today, said that the party has taken very positive note of the ceasefire and wishes to see it transformed into lasting peace.
Party president Pashupati Shumsher JB Rana met the Prime Minister this afternoon and put forth the party's concept and attitude in terms of the cease-fire and peace talks, says the statement.

The statement also expresses the determination of the RPP to continue its initiative to bring, all forces within the constitution, into the dialogue process.


Freedom fighter honoured

RATNANAGAR, Feb. 17: Prajatantrik Bichar Samaj, Chitwan felicitated freedom fighter Maheshwor Lal Shrestha for his incessant contribution in democratic movements for the past five decades amid a programme organised here yesterday on the occasion of 53rd Democracy Day.Central chairman of Nepal University Teachers' Association Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai felicitated him by wrapping with a shawl at a talk programme on 'The role of civic society in the present political context.'The programme was presided over by chairman of the Samaj Keshav Bhakta Sapkota.
