Meet discusses SAARC convention on child welfare

RSS

KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare organised a workshop here today to shed light on the state of implementation of the SAARC Level Convention on Control of Trafficking of Women and Children for Prostitution and the Convention on Child Welfare.

The two conventions were passed by the 11th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Summit held in Kathmandu last year.

It was disclosed on the occasion that Nepal has completed all the work as per law for the ratification of the two conventions.

Bangladesh, Bhutan and the Maldives have already ratified the conventions while other SAARC countries have made preparations for ratification, it is learnt.

The conventions were forwarded to the SAARC Forum by Nepal with the objective of checking at the regional level the trafficking of women and children.

At present, Nepal has been preparing a 13-point policy and a national work plan based on the policy aimed at checking trafficking of women and children for prostitution.

Speaking at the programme, secretary at the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare Vijaya Raj Bhattarai disclosed that a stern law is being formulated to punish those involved in the trafficking of women and girls for prostitution.

Under secretary Kiran Raj Sharma said Nepal has forwarded the conventions because regional cooperation is essential to check prostitution.

Speakers at the programme pointed out the need to establish a separate fund for the rehabilitation of women involved in prostitution as the convention is not clear on this aspect.
