Unity A Must
A GRATEFUL nation is celebrating Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day to pay a glowing
tributes to His late Majesty Prithvi Narayan Shah the Great. This is the day that reminds
all of us of the sacrifice of our forefathers and the importance of unity for the task of
nation building. The founder of modern Nepal, who was then the King of Gorkha, initiated
the process of unification of Nepal, which then had been divided into many small states.
They were weak and vulnerable as they were engaged in conflicts with each other. At the
same time, the external threat was equally dangerous. If remained separate and weak, these
small states of Nepal would have easily fallen prey to invading external power that had
taken control of entire South Asia. Prithvi Narayan Shah felt the strong need for unifying
these tiny principalities and creating a strong and unified Nepal. People took an active
part and provided all necessary support to make the unification campaign a success. The
unification of Nepal has its uniqueness as people right from the grassroots level joined
hands with the Monarch in the campaign. The unity and close relationship between the
Monarch and the people has always been instrumental in Nepal's development and
modernisation as it did in the unification process.
This is the essence of Nepali nationalism. Prithvi Narayan Shah not only unified Nepal
physically and territorially but also brought all Nepalese people together into the single
thread of Nepali nationalism. He declared Nepal as a garden of different ethnic and
cultural communities and protected different cultures and tradition, which has created
unity in diversity. He stimulated the sense of unity, which now needs to be further
promoted and strengthened. It is more necessary today as Nepal is seriously suffering from
mistrust, violence and terrorism. Today's need is the unity and mutual cooperation among
all people irrespective of their political ideologies, castes, creeds and sex. A united
and strong Nepal alone can ensure the bright future of all people. Thus, celebration of
the Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day should develop the feeling of unity and
cooperation among all. We must not forget that united we stand and divided we fall.
