Security, elections must be top priority, says PM

POKHARA, Jan. 20: Prime Minister and Chancellor of Pokhara University Lokendra Bahadur Chand has said that educational knowledge should be imparted to the present generation to build up technical, practical and modern manpower to face the competitive challenges of the 21st century.
Addressing the second convocation of Pokhara University at Lekhanth of Kaski today, Prime Minister Chand said that education should be utilised in a more effective way to produce dedicated citizens in line with our moral values and build a civilised and prosperous society.

Stating that students receiving a proper education are propagators of civilisation and culture and their knowledge and expertise should be utilised to make the motherland better known in the world community and for the progress and prosperity of the country, Prime Minister Chand referred to the key role of educated citizens with higher knowledge in the prosperity of the country.

Stating that the country was certainly in a critical stage at present and the need today was to ensure law and order and hold elections, Prime Minister Chand called upon the entire Nepalese in general and intellectuals in particular to find a way out of the present problem.

Professor Charles Bazerman of the University of California Santa Barbara who was special invitee at the convocation, said the capacity to utilise the present means of communications would make modernisation of education worldwide, and called upon the present generation to make maximum use of the knowledge of modern communications.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Chand gave away certificates to 167 persons completing their post-graduate studies in Construction Management, Natural Heritage Management and Business Administration and graduate level studies in Business Administration, Hotel Management, Tourism Management, Computer Science and Environmental Studies.

Likewise, Prime Minister Chand gave away the Vice-Chancellor's Medal to Ramnath Adhikari for securing the highest marks at graduate level and the Chancellor's Medal to Maniram Gopal.
There are 27 campuses affiliated to Pokhara University at present and classes are being held at the graduate and the post-graduate levels, administration officer of the University Sanu Ghale said on the occasion.

Pro-Chancellor of the University and Minister for Education and Sports Devi Prasad Ojha was also present at the function.

Registrar Prakash Man Gubhaju and Dean Prof. Dr. Jaya Shankar Jha also expressed their views on the occasion.

Prior to this, Prime Minister and Chancellor Lokendra Bahadur Chand presided over the special meeting of the University.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand has said that cooperation from all sectors has become essential in order to maintain law and order in the country and hold elections on time.
Prime Minister Chand made this remark after accepting a memorandum regarding development and construction work in Kaski district handed over to him by RPP central member Surya Bahadur K.C..
On the occasion, the Prime Minister said the ordinance was introduced as the previous budget had to be extended in view of the absence of a new budget and gave assurances that enforcement of projects that have been included in the budget would be accelerated so that they are completed in time.
He also disclosed that discussion is being held on matters relating to compensating farmers whose land was used for the proposed Pokhara International Airport and a decision would be taken on the basis on the relevent policy.

Earlier upon his arrival at Pokhara Airport for the second convocation ceremony of Pokhara University, Prime Minister Chand was warmly welcomed by party workers, civil servants and intellectuals.
