Tourism promotion discussed

KATHMANDU, Jan. 21: An interaction programme on Nepal's trade and investment policies and tourism promotion was organised at the Royal Nepalese Embassy in Beijing Monday.

Welcoming the entrepreneurs, Nepalese Ambassador to China Rajeshwor Acharya briefed the participants about Nepal-China historical and traditional friendship, liberal trade and investment policies of His Majesty's Government of Nepal and potential tourists market of Nepal.

Acharya told the Chinese friends to spread their arms of cooperation in the sectors of trade, investment and tourism for mutual benefit, according to a press release issued by the Royal Nepalese Embassy, Beijing.Nepal being the birthplace of Lord Buddha, he encouraged the Chinese people to visit Nepal and have life time experience of peace, compassion and harmony.

Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Trade envoy Bian Hongdeng said such programme helped the Chinese people to acquire more information about Nepal's tourism, trade and investment policies and potentials.

About 30 business leaders and entrepreneurs from different cities and provinces of China and embassy officials were present during the programme.

The programme was followed by a video presentation on tourism promotion activities of Nepal.


Film road show begins from Jan. 25

KATHMANDU, Jan. 21: The Australian Embassy, in conjuction with the Australian Film Commission, is organising a two-day Film Road Show beginning January 25th in Kathmandu.

This is the second Film Road Show organised by the Embassy in Kathmandu. There will be five films - The Dish, Radiance, Amy, Children of the Revolution and The Sum of Us.

The last two were also included in last year's show.

Film Road Show is a festival of contemporary Australian films that builds on the success of last year's film festival. The aim of the Film Roadshow is to provide an insight into Australia, its people and landscape, their lifestyle, culture and politics, Keith Gardner, the Australian Ambassador to Nepal, told the press today.Ambassador Gardner will open the show at the Russian Culture Centre on January 23 with the screening of The Dish for a select audience. The film together with Radiance and Amy will be screened on the 25th and the remaining two on the 26th for the general audience.The film show is being held under the auspices of the Australian International Cultural Council.


Stop HR violations

KATHMANDU, Jan. 21: The National Assembly Social Justice Committee meeting today called for an immediate stop to the violation of human rights and decided to acquire information from the department concerned about news reports stating that people injured in course of operations carried out by the security forces could not receive treatment.

The meeting also decided to direct the government to take necessary measures to protect the people affected by the cold wave that has hit the Terai region.

Likewise, a decision was also taken to direct the government to provide prompt treatment to children and the elderly in the freed Kamaiya camps now suffering from pneumonia, diarrhoea and vomiting and to demand information on the steps taken in this connection.

The committee has also decided to query the Foreign Ministry about the scarcity of passport books in the districts which has obstructed people seeking to go abroad for foreign employment or on business.

A sub-committee was also constituted under the convenorship of Surendra Prasad Pandey to prepare a report on the committee's work since December 4 and present it before the committee within the next l0 days.MP Sukraraj Sharma, Dr Ram Man Shrestha and Rishibabu Pariyar are also represented on the committee.Committee chairperson Ambika Pant Chapagain chaired the meeting.


Maoists kidnap UML worker

DHANKUTA, Jan. 21: CPN-UML district committee member and Chanuwa VDC outgoing chairman Deepak Budhathoki has been kidnapped, last night.

CPN-UML district secretary Tikaram Chemjong informed that a group of 20 - 25 persons kidnapped him when he had come for casting votes at the party office at Chanuwa VDC ward No. 6 for the selection of representatives to the seventh central convention of the party.

Earlier, the Maoists had kidnapped secretary of the CPN-UML, Mudhebas Village Committee Hasta Tumba and freed him three days later.
