Absent students to be fined

By A Staff Reporter

KATHMANDU, Mar. 26: Some private educational institutions have adopted a new method to collect money from students. They have begun charging fees to students for being absent from classes.
Prasadi Academy, Manbhawan is one such institution adopting the special charges. It has fixed a fine of Rs. 25 for being absent per day in its bills.

"This is an arbitrary move beyond limitation," said a parent, who was baffled after finding that the school bill has charged his children for being absent. "We only mention this fee in the bill but do not take it from the students," said Bikram Rai, principal at the Academy.

Rai claims that the higher secondary schools have been collecting this fee for the last four years in order to discourage absenteeism in the schools. The Higher Secondary Education Council cannot take action against them because the higher secondary schools themselves formulate laws and regulations for their operation, Asha Batsa, deputy director of the Council said.

Some schools charge as high as Rs. 100 from those bunking classes per day. Receipts of such bills are kept at this publication house. Due to the security reason, the name of the parents has not been disclosed.
