Qatar Airways to start two weekly flights from Ktm

By A Staff Reporter

KATHMANDU, Mar. 27: Qatar Airways will start two direct weekly flights between Kathmandu and Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, on a code-sharing basis with Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC) from Wednesday.

"We have reached a commercial agreement with RNAC regarding this," Gyan Namerasinche, Area Manager- Nepal of the airline told a press conference here Thursday.

The flights will leave Kathmandu every Wednesday and Sunday at 16:30 hours and return from Kuala Lumpur at 04:45 hours every Thursday and Monday.

Namerasinche said that the new air service to Kuala Lumpur was just part of the airline's commitment to increase its air services to and from Nepal. The airline has been operating air services to Nepal with high priority since 1995, only a year after its launching.

"The airline doesn't want to compete with RNAC. We will work together with the national carrier to create traffic," said Joy Dewan, managing director of Zenith Travels that represents Qatar Airways in Nepal.

"Traffic is something that we need to create through aggressive marketing and promotional activities," said Dewan, who denied that the airline would depend only on Nepalese workers going to Malaysia.
He said that since major airlines are operating to Kuala Lumpur, it might be easier for Qatar Airways and RNAC to bring in more tourists from different parts of the world.

In the meantime, the airline will also be increasing two flights a week on the Kathmandu-Doha-Kathmandu route from April this year. This will boost the number of flights to nine a week on the route.

The airline is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. As part of its growth plan, it will extend its route network to 50 destinations across the world by the end of this year. At present, it operates to 39 destinations. It has recently announced the addition of Manchester, Rome, Islamabad and Kochi to its increasing route network.
